Speciality coffee is chosen by those who are looking for more than just caffeine: quality and a unique experience. But how can you tell if a coffee is speciality coffee?
Today we want to give you some tips so you can recognise it for yourself. When you try it, drinking coffee will be a unique experience.
What is specialty coffee?
The term specialty coffee refers to coffees that pay attention to quality at every stage. And that care extends from seed selection to preparation in the cup.
They are evaluated by certified tasters who, among other things and according to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) protocol, score at least 80 out of 100 points (although we consider 84 and above).
These coffees are grown under special conditions. They are located at specific altitudes and climates, with varieties that express the best of their soil and environment by expert coffee growers.
This means that the coffee, from cultivation to cup, has undergone a meticulous process that respects the qualities of the bean. For all these reasons, its traceability is guaranteed.
At Cafés El Magnífico, we work directly with producers who share these values and allow us to offer coffees that tell their own story.
Key points for recognising authentic specialty coffee
The colour of coffee
The colour of the bean or ground coffee tells us a lot about its quality. So, a speciality coffee:
- It has a uniform colour, with no burnt grains or visible defects.
- The roast is usually medium or light, designed to highlight the characteristics of the origin.
- If the coffee is too dark, it is probably not specialty coffee. Specialty coffee roasters decide on a type of roast that enhances the notes and personal characteristics of each batch of coffee. Roasting is not burning.
The source information
Normally, if a coffee is specialty, you will find this information on its packaging:
- Name of the coffee grower, farm, cooperative or washing station.
- Growing region (the terroir of coffee is as important as that of wine).
- Variety (Caturra, Bourbon, etc.).
- Altitude and processing method (washed, natural, honey).
- Tasting notes and roast type (espresso, filter, omni).
- Roasting date (key information for knowing if the coffee is fresh, which will improve its aroma and flavour).
The amount of coffee and the format
Finally, although it is not a determining factor in quality, specialty coffee in retail is usually sold in moderate quantities (250g, 500g). The aim is to ensure that you consume it fresh. In addition, it will come in special packaging so that its freshness is better preserved for longer. At Cafés El Magnífico, we use packaging with a one-way degassing valve that prevents oxygen from entering.
