How to prepare V60 coffee step by step

What is the V60?

The V60 is a manual drip coffee maker designed by Hario. Its name refers to the 60-degree angle of its cone, a shape that promotes uniform extraction. Thanks to its internal ridges and a large bottom hole, the flow of water can be precisely controlled, directly influencing the final result.

Preparing V60 filter coffee allows the acidity, body and aromatic nuances of the coffee to be highlighted, making it one of the most widely used preparation methods in the specialty coffee sector.

Items needed to prepare V60 coffee

Before you begin, make sure you have the following items on hand. Take note.

  • V60 coffee maker

These come in different materials—ceramic, glass, plastic, or metal—all of which are suitable for preparing coffee with Hario V60.

  • V60 filter

You will need a paper filter specifically designed for V60.

  • Suitable coffee

We recommend using freshly roasted speciality coffee. The origin, roast profile and freshness will make all the difference in the cup.

  • Grind

The ideal grind for the V60 is medium, similar to coarse salt.

  • Other accessories

It is also highly recommended to have a scale for weighing coffee and water, a gooseneck kettle, filtered water, and a container or cup for serving the coffee.

How to prepare V60 coffee step by step

We offer you this guide so that you can achieve a good result.

  • Step 1: Heat the water and prepare the filter

Heat the water to a temperature of between 90 and 96 °C. Place the paper filter in the coffee maker and rinse it with hot water. This step removes any possible paper taste and preheats both the V60 and the container.

  • Step 2: Measure and grind the coffee

Weigh between 18 and 24 grams of ground coffee for every 300 ml of water. Adjusting this ratio is key in any V60 coffee recipe and can be adapted to suit personal taste. At El Magnífico, we recommend using 22 g for 320 ml of water.

  • Step 3: Bloom or pre-infusion

Pour a small amount of hot water (three times the weight of the coffee) and let it sit for about 30 seconds. This pre-infusion or ‘bloom’ allows the coffee to release gases and promotes a more balanced extraction.

  • Step 4: Pouring the water

Continue pouring the water in controlled, circular motions, avoiding direct contact with the filter. The entire process should take between 2:30 and 3 minutes. This step is essential to understanding how to make V60 coffee correctly.

  • Step 5: Enjoying the coffee

Once the extraction is complete, remove the V60 and serve the coffee. Adjusting the grind, proportion or time will help you perfect the final result in your cup.
