The Farm
Bantu Blossom is a coffee grown in the Rwenzori region of western Uganda, a mountainous area located at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, known for its fertile soils, abundant rainfall, and excellent conditions for coffee cultivation. Behind this project is Agri Evolve, a Ugandan company founded in 2016 with the aim of working directly with smallholder farmers and improving both coffee quality and the economic impact on local communities.
The project brings together thousands of smallholder coffee farmers who cultivate family-owned plots at high altitudes, where coffee plays an essential role in household livelihoods. Agri Evolve maintains a close relationship with the producers, providing technical support, agronomic training, and access to a more transparent and stable market.
Beyond coffee, the project has a strong social and environmental commitment, promoting initiatives related to education, gender equality, improved household incomes, and sustainable farming practices. Its philosophy is based on building a more balanced value chain, where quality, community, and sustainability progress hand in hand.
Process method
This lot has been processed using the natural method. The cherries are hand-picked at their optimal stage of ripeness and taken to the washing station for processing.
The cherries are then slowly dried on raised beds, where they are regularly turned and carefully monitored to ensure even dehydration and preserve the quality of the lot. Careful control of the drying process is key to developing aromatic complexity while maintaining a clean and balanced profile.
This process enhances the fruity and sweet character typical of high-altitude natural coffees, resulting in a complex, vibrant, and expressive cup that faithfully reflects the character of its Ugandan origin.
Origin
Uganda has historically been linked to the cultivation of Robusta—a species native to its tropical forests that has long driven much of the country’s coffee production and exports. However, Uganda also boasts a long tradition of growing Arabica, particularly in its mountainous regions, where altitude and climatic conditions allow for the development of high-quality coffees.
Two areas stand out in particular: the slopes of Mount Elgon in the east and the Rwenzori Mountains in the west. In these regions, thousands of smallholders grow Arabica on high-altitude family plots, benefiting from cooler temperatures, abundant rainfall, and fertile soils that foster slow cherry maturation and complex cup profiles.
For many years, much of this coffee was marketed without sufficient distinction regarding its origin or the specific work of individual communities. The rise of specialty coffee has begun to change this landscape. Improvements in cherry selection, processing, drying, and traceability have made it possible to separate higher-quality lots and showcase the distinct identity of each region more clearly. This shift is particularly notable in the Rwenzori region, where various projects are working directly with smallholders to enhance quality and develop both natural and washed coffees. Their Arabicas are displaying increasingly clean, sweet, fruity, and complex profiles, helping to transform the international perception of Ugandan coffee. Today, Uganda is forging a much broader identity within the specialty coffee world: a country that preserves its significant Robusta heritage while seeing its high-altitude Arabica demonstrate immense potential and gain growing international recognition.
